  3.                  I N S T A L L A T I O N   H E L P
  4.

  6.      Please take a moment to read these installation instructions.
  7.      They will give you important information about the different
  8.      installation options, as well as tips and tricks if you
  9.      encounter difficulties.
  10.  
  11.      You must have DOS equivalent to version 3.0 or greater, or OS/2
  12.      version 2.0 or greater to install this product.
  13.  
  14.

  16.               I N S T A L L A T I O N   C H O I C E S:

  19.  
  20. 1.)  NEW INSTALL:
  21.  
  22.      If you choose New Install, the GeoPublish files will be installed
  23.      into a new directory called GEOPUBL on your hard drive.
  24.  
  25.      If you choose to install GeoPublish into an alternate directory
  26.      where any version of Geoworks GeoPublish already exists, all of the
  27.      system files common to both products will be overwritten with the
  28.      newer versions. Installing GeoPublish in this manner may make the
  29.      original GeoPublish product unusable.
  30.  
  31.  
  32. 2.)  INSTALLATION TOOLS:
  33.  
  34.      If you choose Installation Tools, you will be able to install any
  35.      of the individual files which make up GeoPublish. This choice
  36.      should be used if any of the files are damaged during use after
  37.      the original installation process.
  38.  
  39. 3.)  FINISHED:
  40.  
  41.      If you choose Finished, you will exit the installation program.
  42.  
  43.        ******************************************************
  44.          I N S T A L L A T I O N   T I P S  &  T R I C K S:
  45.        ******************************************************
  46.  
  47. 1.)   It's always a good idea to back up any important files
  48.       on your system. This would be an excellent time to remove
  49.       any files that you no longer use.  Also, you should
  50.       run a diagnostic program such as CHKDSK or SCANDISK to
  51.       make sure your hard drive is in good working order.  To
  52.       run CHKDSK on your C: drive, type
  53.  
  54.       CHKDSK
  55.  
  56.       at a C:\ prompt.  For more information on CHKDSK, consult
  57.       your DOS manual.
  58.  
  59. 2.)   The installation will not proceed normally if you do not
  60.       have enough free disk space on your hard drive. You will
  61.       need at least 10 Megabytes of free disk space to install
  62.       GeoPublish.  If the installation fails, check to see
  63.       how much space you have left on your hard drive by typing
  64.  
  65.       DIR
  66.  
  67.       at a C:\ prompt.  At the end of the list of files you will
  68.       see the number of bytes free on the hard drive.  If you
  69.       have 0 bytes free, you ran out of space.  You should delete
  70.       as many files as you can and try the install procedure again.
  71.  
  72. 3.)   You may get the error "Not enough memory to install" or the
  73.       install procedure may fail before it can copy any files
  74.       to your hard drive if you have less than 500K (512,000 bytes)
  75.       of free conventional memory.  The first thing to try is our
  76.       secondary install program INSTALLB.  INSTALLB.EXE requires
  77.       much less conventional memory than INSTALL.EXE but it will
  78.       also take longer.
  79.  
  80. 4.)   The install program will check your CONFIG.SYS for the proper
  81.       FILES and BUFFERS size.  These should both be set to 30.
  82.       (Unless you are using DR DOS or Novell DOS, in which case
  83.       your FILES setting should equal 120.) If the install modifies
  84.       your CONFIG.SYS you will need to reboot your computer for the
  85.       changes to take effect.
  86.  
  87. 5.)   The install program will check your AUTOEXEC.BAT to
  88.       determine if the GEOPUBL directory needs to be placed
  89.       in the path.  If the install modifies your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  90.       you will need to reboot your computer for the changes to
  91.       take effect.
  92.  
  93. 6.)   If you are having trouble with a particular floppy disk,
  94.       you should use CHKDSK to check the integrity of the disk.
  95.       Put the disk in the appropriate drive and type
  96.  
  97.       CHKDSK
  98.  
  99.       at the a: or b: prompt. If you get a message such as
  100.       "Errors found" you will need replacement disks. Call our
  101.       customer service department at (02) 457 8548 for replacements.
  102.  
  103. 7.)   With some computers, you may need to put disks in ALL
  104.       available drives in order to proceed.  Additionally, it has
  105.       been reported that when installing to a Bernoulli drive, the
  106.       drive must be "locked" (the door shut and a cartridge placed
  107.       in the drive) BEFORE allowing the installer to check
  108.       available drives.  If you have a Bernoulli drive, it should
  109.       be "locked" even if you are not attempting to install to it.
  110.  
  111. 8.)   If you do not complete the installation, a residual
  112.       directory may exist.  The DIRECTORY name will be
  113.       ISFYQVO.TWJ and may contain a FILE called SWAPFILE.HDR.
  114.  
  115.       To delete the FILE, type the following at the DOS prompt:
  116.  
  117.                 del isfyqvo.twj\*.*
  118.                 (hit the enter key)
  119.  
  120.       You will then see the following:
  121.  
  122.                 All files in directory will be deleted!
  123.                 Are you sure (Y/N)?
  124.                 (hit a "y" and the enter key)
  125.  
  126.       To delete the DIRECTORY, type the following at the
  127.       DOS prompt:
  128.  
  129.                 rd isfyqvo.twj
  130.                 (hit the enter key)
  131.  
  132. 9.)   You can install GeoPublish under OS/2 in a regular DOS
  133.       full screen box, not one that boots a specific version of
  134.       DOS. Therefore, the DOS_STARTUP_DRIVE setting on the session
  135.       page should be blank. Increase the number of DOS_FILES
  136.       available to that DOS box to at least 80. Make sure that the
  137.       HW_TIMER setting is on. All other values can be left at the
  138.       default.
  139.  
  140.       If you are installing from an OS/2 DOS session you may
  141.       receive an error message indicating that you don't have
  142.       enough room on your hard drive.  NOTE:  The install
  143.       program will allow you continue if you are sure that there
  144.       is enough space.
  145.  
  146.       You may also get a "SYS Error 0005. Access Denied" error
  147.       while installing under OS/2, because OS/2 thinks there is
  148.       an extended attribute set for all of the files on the
  149.       installation disks.
  150.  
  151.       To change this extended attribute:
  152.  
  153.       1. Use the DISKCOPY command to copy each GeoPublish
  154.       installation disk to a diskette that is not write protected.
  155.  
  156.       2. Run CHKDSK /f on each diskette. OS/2 will correct what
  157.       it thinks is an extended attribute error on every single file.
  158.  
  159.  
  160.

  163.             *********************************************

  166.  
  167. The following information may help you if you complete the installation
  168. of GeoPublish but are having trouble getting up and running.
  169.  
  170.  
  171. 1.)   If you chose to use the default directory during installation,
  172.       you will find GeoPublish in a directory called GEOPUBL. The
  173.       command to start the program is PUB.  Therefore, to start
  174.       GeoPublish from a C:\ prompt type
  175.  
  176.       CD\GEOPUBL
  177.       PUB
  178.  
  179.       If you would like GeoPublish to start automatically when you
  180.       turn on the computer, type
  181.  
  182.       C:
  183.       CD\GEOPUBL
  184.       BT2GEOS
  185.  
  186.       (If you have installed GeoPublish in a directory other than
  187.       C:\GEOPUBL, substitute the appropriate drive and directory in
  188.       these commands.)
  189.  
  190.       The commands above run a batch file that will modify your
  191.       AUTOEXEC.BAT to run GeoPublish when you turn on your computer.
  192.       We cannot guarantee that this will work on all systems, in which
  193.       case you will have to modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT yourself.  The
  194.       AUTOEXEC.BAT can be found in the root directory of the C: drive.
  195.       You can edit these files with any text editor such as MS-DOS'
  196.       Edit, DR-DOS' Editor or the Text File Editor in GeoPublish.
  197.  
  198. 2.)   When you install the software, a file called GEOHELP.EXE is
  199.       installed along with the other Geoworks files. GeoHelp is a
  200.       program designed to help you diagnose and fix problems you
  201.       may encounter. To start the GeoHelp program
  202.  
  203.       1. Install as much of GeoPublish as you can.
  204.  
  205.       2. At the DOS prompt type:
  206.  
  207.       C:
  208.       CD \GEOPUBL
  209.       GEOHELP
  210.  
  211.       (If you have installed GeoPublish in a directory other
  212.       than C:\GEOPUBL, substitute the appropriate drive and
  213.       directory in these commands.)
  214.  
  215. 3.)   Some hardware and software products need special treatment to
  216.       work with GeoPublish. One way to see if a software conflict
  217.       is behind your problem is to boot clean. Try the following
  218.       procedure (which is also automated in GeoHelp). It's an easy
  219.       way to create a special startup disk that you can use to make
  220.       sure no other software programs load into memory. The beauty
  221.       of this method is that it makes no changes to your hard disk.
  222.       Note: This procedure will not work if you are using a disk
  223.       compression program.
  224.  
  225.       1.   Put a blank disk in drive A: and format it as a
  226.            DOS system disk by typing
  227.  
  228.            FORMAT A: /S
  229.  
  230.            at the DOS prompt.
  231.  
  232.       2.   After the format is complete, restart your machine
  233.            with this newly formatted disk in drive A. Your
  234.            computer ignores the commands in your normal
  235.            CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files altogether.
  236.  
  237.       3.   Run GEOS by typing
  238.  
  239.            C:
  240.            CD\GEOPUBL
  241.            PUB
  242.  
  243.       If GeoPublish now runs correctly, something in the CONFIG.SYS
  244.       or AUTOEXEC.BAT file on your hard disk was probably causing the
  245.       problem. You need to do some trial-and-error testing adding and
  246.       removing lines to and from these files to isolate the problem.
  247.  
  248. 4.)   If you have extended or expanded memory (any RAM beyond 640K)
  249.       and you're having problems running your software, try starting
  250.       GEOS by typing
  251.  
  252.       PUB /nomem
  253.  
  254.       At the DOS prompt in the directory where you installed
  255.       GeoPublish. Note: You must type nomem in lowercase letters.
  256.       The nomem parameter instructs GeoPublish to ignore any
  257.       extended or expanded memory in your system. If using nomem
  258.       solves your problem, it was probably caused by a
  259.       Terminate-and-Stay-Resident program (TSR) that uses your
  260.       expanded or extended memory. The major culprits include RAM
  261.       disks, disk caches, and advanced memory managers.
  262.  
  263.       If you would like to just leave things the way they are, you
  264.       can make the "nomem" setting permanent. Realize that if you
  265.       do this, GeoPublish won't use the expanded or extended memory
  266.       in your computer and will therefore, run slower.
  267.       To make the nomem setting permanent
  268.  
  269.       1.      Open the Preferences desk tool.
  270.  
  271.       2.      Choose Computer.
  272.  
  273.       3.      Select None for Extra Memory Type and click OK.
  274.  
  275.       Setting the nomem parameter will not affect your other programs
  276.       or their use of higher memory.
  277.  
  278. 5.)   To test for possible hardware conflicts, try starting GEOS
  279.       by typing
  280.  
  281.       PUB /log
  282.  
  283.       At the DOS prompt in the directory where you installed
  284.       GeoPublish. Note: You must type log in lowercase letters.
  285.       The log parameter instructs GEOS to initialize all the system
  286.       hardware before starting. If your computer freezes, reboot and
  287.       check the file geos.log by typing:
  288.  
  289.       TYPE C:\GEOPUBL\PRIVDATA\GEOS.LOG
  290.  
  291.       This file will contain a list indicating which of the many
  292.       hardware devices on your system were successfully initialized.
  293.       The last entry will give you a better indication of where the
  294.       problem lies. For example, if the last thing you see on the
  295.       list is
  296.  
  297.       Initializing Mouse Driver
  298.  
  299.       GEOS could be having trouble with your mouse. Write down the
  300.       last module to be initialized before you call for technical
  301.       support.  If the last thing you see on the list is
  302.  
  303.       Initializing Non-Switching Task Driver
  304.  
  305.       Then GEOS probably initialized all the hardware successfully.
  306.       While this does not rule out the possibility of a hardware
  307.       conflict it is a good indication that the problem lies elsewhere.
  308.  
  309. 6.)   GeoPublish is compatible with MS DOS 6.0 and 6.2.
  310.       However, you will need the line
  311.  
  312.       DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
  313.  
  314.       in your CONFIG.SYS file. MS DOS usually places this line in
  315.       your CONFIG.SYS file when you install, but you should make
  316.       sure it is still there.
  317.  
  318. 7.)   GeoPublish is compatible with DR DOS 6.0.
  319.       However, you will need the line
  320.  
  321.       FILES=120
  322.  
  323.       in your CONFIG.SYS file.
  324.  
  325.       If you are using Superstor disk compression and you get the
  326.       error, "Insert disk in drive C:" you have the very first
  327.       release of DR DOS 6.0 and Superstor and you should contact
  328.       Novell to receive an update. The update you will need is the
  329.       4/92 version or DR DOS 6.0.  There is a later 3/93 update but
  330.       it does not include the Superstor driver. A potential work
  331.       around to the problem is to put the line
  332.  
  333.       drive d = 65535
  334.  
  335.       in the GEOS.INI file in the [system] section.  This is not a
  336.       guaranteed solution, and if it fails, you should contact Novell
  337.       for an update at 1-800-NETWARE.
  338.  
  339. 8.)   GeoPublish is compatible with Novell DOS 7.  However,
  340.       you will need the line
  341.  
  342.       FILES=120
  343.  
  344.       in your CONFIG.SYS file.
  345.  
  346.       If you are using NWCACHE, you may find it necessary to disable
  347.       the "write delay" feature in order to run GeoPublish properly.
  348.       Consult your DOS manual for more information about NWCACHE.
  349.  
  350. 9.)   GeoPublish is compatible with Novell Netware, however, you
  351.       must have Ensemble installed on a local hard drive.  GeoPublish
  352.       cannot be run from the network server and we do not sell network
  353.       site licenses. Ensemble should be able to read from network drives
  354.       and print to a network printer.
  355.  
  356.       If you are connected to a Novell network, you must create a
  357.       SHELL.CFG file in your C: drive's root directory.  To create
  358.       the file, type
  359.  
  360.       ECHO FILE HANDLES = 100 > SHELL.CFG
  361.  
  362.       at the C:\ prompt and press enter.
  363.  
  364. 10.)  There is a known conflict with QEMM's "Stealth Mode" and
  365.       Ensemble when Ensemble is using Expanded memory.
  366.       One solution is to disable the stealth mode option.
  367.       The QEMM line in the CONFIG.SYS will look like
  368.  
  369.       DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS RAM X=C800-CBFF ST:M R:2
  370.  
  371.       Simply remove the ST:M from the line and the problem
  372.       should go away.
  373.       If you want to use stealth mode for your other programs and
  374.       tell GEOS to ignore stealth, follow this procedure:
  375.  
  376.       From the C:\GEOPUBL prompt, type
  377.  
  378.       PUB /nomem
  379.  
  380.       (that's a forward slash, and the nomem must be in lower case)
  381.       to enter Ensemble.  The /nomem tells Ensemble to ignore the
  382.       high memory area, which is where QEMM is causing conflicts.
  383.  
  384.       Go into Preferences and click on the Computer button.  Under
  385.       Extra Memory Type, turn OFF Expanded (LIM EMS).  You can
  386.       turn on Extended and XMS/HIMEM.SYS, if they aren't already
  387.       selected.  Click on the OK button.  When Ensemble tells you
  388.       it needs to be restarted, click on OK, then Yes.  The next
  389.       time you want to enter Ensemble, you can just type PUB at
  390.       the C:\GEOPUBL prompt.
  391.  
  392. 11.)  If you get a "SHARE.EXE Table Overflow Error" when trying
  393.       to run GeoPublish, try adding
  394.  
  395.       INSTALL=C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /f:4096
  396.  
  397.       to your CONFIG.SYS file.  If the error message persists,
  398.       increase the number 4096 in increments of 2048 until the
  399.       problem goes away.  It should not be necessary to use a
  400.       number higher than 10240.
  401.  
  402. 12.)  If you get the error "GEOS.INI file has been corrupted"
  403.       when you try to run GeoPublish, you will need to restore
  404.       the file. The GEOS.INI file is located in the C:\GEOPUBL
  405.       directory and contains information about your preferences
  406.       settings. Should the file ever become damaged, you can copy
  407.       the original GEOS.INI file from installation disk #1 by typing
  408.  
  409.       COPY A:GEOS.INI C:\GEOPUBL
  410.  
  411.       (If you have installed GeoPublish in a directory other
  412.       than C:\GEOPUBL, or your installation disk is in a different
  413.       drive, substitute the appropriate drive and directory in these
  414.       commands.)
  415.       You will then have to reconfigure your preferences settings
  416.       such as your mouse and printer driver selections.  You may
  417.       wish to make a backup of your GEOS.INI file to avoid having to
  418.       reconfigure your preferences in case of this particular
  419.       problem.
  420.  
  421. 13.)  If you have difficulty reading any of your drives or
  422.       if any phantom drives show up that do not belong, you should
  423.       try editing the GEOS.INI file to tell GEOS the exact drive
  424.       specifications.  For example in the [system] section of the
  425.       GEOS.INI file you could add the line
  426.  
  427.       drive b = 0
  428.  
  429.       This tells GEOS to ignore drive b.  Using the format
  430.  
  431.       drive <letter> = <number>
  432.  
  433.       you can use any of the following drive specifications
  434.  
  435.       0       =>      Ignore the drive
  436.       360     =>      360K Low Density 5.25" floppy disk
  437.       720     =>      720K Low Density 3.5" floppy disk
  438.       1200    =>      1.2M High Density 5.25" floppy disk
  439.       1440    =>      1.44M High Density 3.5" floppy disk
  440.       2880    =>      2.88M 3.5" floppy disk
  441.       65535   =>      Hard drive
  442.  
  443.       If trouble reading, copying or formatting floppies persists, try putting
  444.  
  445.       waitpost = false
  446.  
  447.       in the [system] section of the GEOS.INI file.
  448.  
  449. 14.)  If you completed the install and you cannot see anything on
  450.       your screen when you try to start GeoPublish, the install
  451.       program may have chosen the wrong video driver.  The first
  452.       step in solving this problem is to know what type of video
  453.       adapter you have.  If you do not know, you should contact your
  454.       hardware vendor to find out.  Then follow these steps
  455.  
  456.       1.    Run install from the first disk again by typing a:install
  457.  
  458.       2.    Choose the Installation Tools Option
  459.  
  460.       3.    Install one of the following files based on your
  461.             display adapter
  462.  
  463.             loadervg.exe            VGA
  464.             loadereg.exe            EGA
  465.             loadercg.exe            CGA
  466.             loadermc.exe            MCGA
  467.             loaderhg.exe            Hercules
  468.  
  469.       4.    Rename the file you install to loader.exe by typing
  470.  
  471.             CD\GEOPUBL
  472.             REN LOADERHG.EXE LOADER.EXE
  473.  
  474.       In this example we installed loaderhg.exe into the GEOPUBL
  475.       directory.  If you have a different display device or you
  476.       installed GeoPublish in a different directory,
  477.       substitute the appropriate display device and directory
  478.       in the commands above.
  479.  
  480.       5.    Edit the GEOS.INI file to add the appropriate video
  481.             driver entries immediately below the line [screen 0]
  482.  
  483.             device = VGA: 640x480 16-Color
  484.             driver = Standard VGA Driver
  485.  
  486.             device = EGA: 640x350 16-Color
  487.             driver = EGA Driver
  488.  
  489.             device = CGA Compatible: 640x200 Mono
  490.             driver = CGA Driver
  491.  
  492.             device = IBM MCGA: 640x480 Mono
  493.             driver = MCGA Driver
  494.  
  495.             device = Hercules HGC Compatible: 720x348 Mono
  496.             driver = Hercules Monochrome Driver
  497.  
  498.       A few systems have to be switched to graphics mode from
  499.       the keyboard before they will run GeoPublish. If you
  500.       start GeoPublish and get a blank screen, try typing
  501.       either of these commands at the DOS prompt before you
  502.       start GeoPublish:
  503.  
  504.       MODE CO80 (that's c o 8 zero - changes to 80-column mode on some systems)
  505.            or
  506.       MODE MONO (changes to monochrome mode on some systems)
  507.  
  508.  
  509.             ***************************************
  510.                 R E M O V I N G  E N S E M B L E
  511.             ***************************************
  512.  
  513.       WARNING: Make sure that you have backup copies of any files that
  514.       are important to you. Improper use of the uninstall program will
  515.       result in data loss.
  516.  
  517.       We have included a program called UNINSTAL.BAT that will
  518.       completely remove GeoPublish from your hard drive. This
  519.       program will remove any documents you have created along with
  520.       the system files, therefore we recommend that you use extra caution.
  521.       To completely remove GeoPublish, type:
  522.  
  523.       CD\GEOPUBL
  524.       UNINSTAL
  525.  
  526.       at a C:\ prompt. (If you have installed GeoPublish in a
  527.       directory other than C:\GEOPUBL, substitute the appropriate
  528.       drive and directory in these commands.)
